HEIC Live Photo Guide

Learn what is inside an iPhone Live Photo, why HEIC and LIVP files can be hard to open, and which LivePhotoKit tool to use for JPG, MP4, GIF, PNG, or WebP output.

Everything runs in your browser via WebAssembly. Files never leave your device.

How it works

  1. 1Start with your exported iPhone Live Photo, HEIC image, or LIVP package.
  2. 2Choose whether you need a still image, a video clip, a GIF, or a compressed web image.
  3. 3Use the matching LivePhotoKit converter. Everything runs locally in your browser with no upload.

What is a HEIC Live Photo?

A Live Photo is not just one file. On an iPhone, the still image is usually stored as HEIC, while the motion part is stored as a short video clip. When exported or shared, those parts may appear as a LIVP package, which is basically a container holding the still photo and the video together.

That is why a Live Photo often fails outside Apple devices. Windows, Android, upload forms, and older editors may not understand HEIC, MOV, or LIVP. The file is not broken. It is just wrapped in Apple formats that many systems do not support by default.

Which format should you convert to?

Use JPG when you need a normal photo for forms, email, printing, marketplaces, or social profiles. Use MP4 when you want the moving part of the Live Photo. Use GIF when you want a silent looping animation for chats. Use PNG when you need a lossless still image. Use WebP when you want a smaller image for websites.

The important part is not the file extension. The important part is the job you need the file to do. A single Live Photo can produce several useful outputs, and each one solves a different compatibility problem.

Why browser-based conversion is safer

Many photo converters ask you to upload personal images to a server. That is not ideal for family photos, work files, screenshots, or anything private. LivePhotoKit runs the conversion locally in your browser, so your files stay on your own device.

This also makes the workflow faster. There is no upload queue, no waiting for a server, and no need to install desktop software. Once the page loads, the conversion happens directly on your computer or phone.

Best tools for HEIC and Live Photo files

If you have a HEIC still image, start with HEIC to JPG, HEIC to PNG, HEIC to WebP, or HEIC Viewer. If you have a LIVP package, start with LIVP to JPG for the still frame or LIVP to MP4 for the video. If you want social-friendly motion, use Live Photo to GIF.

For large batches, use the batch Live Photo converter so you can process multiple files at once and download the results together.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Live Photo the same as a HEIC file?

No. HEIC is usually the still image part. A Live Photo also includes a short video clip, and it may be exported as a LIVP package that contains both parts.

Why can Windows not open my iPhone Live Photo?

Windows does not natively understand every Apple photo container. Converting the Live Photo to JPG or MP4 makes it usable on almost any device.

Can I keep the moving part of a Live Photo?

Yes. Use LIVP to MP4 or Live Photo to GIF if you want the motion. Use JPG or PNG only if you want the still image.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. LivePhotoKit processes files locally in your browser. Your files are not sent to a server.
