What you're actually extracting from a Live Photo
Every Live Photo is two things wrapped in one package: a single high-resolution still frame — usually a 12-megapixel HEIC image — and a short companion video of roughly three seconds. When you tap the shutter, the camera marks one of those video frames as the “key photo,” and that key frame is the crisp, full-quality still you see as the cover of the Live Photo in your camera roll. It is captured at the camera's full sensor resolution, not pulled from the lower-quality motion clip.
Converting a Live Photo to JPG means taking that full-resolution still and re-saving it in the universal JPG format. This is a genuinely different operation from grabbing a frame out of the video: the key still is sharper, larger, and free of the motion blur and compression that affect video frames. That distinction matters when you care about image quality — you want the photo Apple captured, not a screenshot of the playback.
Why JPG, and why not just keep the HEIC?
The still inside a Live Photo is typically stored as HEIC, Apple's space-saving format. HEIC is excellent for fitting thousands of photos on a phone, but it is an Apple-first format that older Windows installs, many Android phones, countless websites, and a lot of chat apps simply refuse to open. The moment that still leaves your iPhone, HEIC becomes a wall.
JPG is the opposite: it has been the universal photo format for nearly three decades and opens on essentially everything — every operating system, browser, email client, marketplace, and upload form. By extracting the Live Photo's still as JPG, you turn a private Apple file into a portable image you can email, post to a job application, upload to eBay or a government portal, or send to an Android friend, with zero risk of it being rejected for the wrong format.
Key frame vs key still vs a video screenshot
There are three very different ways to get a “still” from a Live Photo, and they're not equal. The best is the original key still — the full-resolution photo the camera captured. The second is changing which frame of the motion is used as the key photo (the iPhone lets you scrub and pick a different moment), which still produces a real still but from the video timeline. The worst is taking a screenshot of the Live Photo playing, which captures whatever your screen showed at lower resolution with on-screen interface elements.
This converter always reaches for the highest-quality still available in the package, so you get the camera-grade image rather than a degraded video grab. If your goal is a particular moment from the motion rather than the cover frame, that's a different need — but for the common case of “I just want this Live Photo as a normal photo,” extracting the key still as JPG is exactly right.
How quality is preserved during conversion
We export JPG at 92% quality, a level that is visually indistinguishable from the source for any normal use — viewing on a phone or monitor, printing, posting, or uploading. The still is processed at its native resolution, so you are not downscaling or cropping unless you choose to. The result looks like the original photo, just in a format the whole world can open.
The honest technical caveat is that JPG uses lossy compression, so the converted file is mathematically not byte-for-byte identical to the HEIC source, and it may be slightly larger because JPG is a less efficient codec.
